LED Face Mask

An LED face mask brings light therapy home: red and near-infrared light for fine lines and firmer skin, blue light for blemishes. It isn't about heat – it's light that your skin cells absorb. Prices range from under £50 to well over £400, and the price tag says surprisingly little about what actually works. What matters is the wavelengths, the number of LEDs, and using the mask consistently for several weeks.

How an LED face mask works

An LED face mask shines light at specific wavelengths directly onto your skin. The treatment is called photobiomodulation: red and near-infrared light are thought to stimulate the cells' "power stations" (the mitochondria), calm inflammation and boost collagen – the protein that keeps skin firm. Blue light works differently: it's antibacterial, which is why it's used for acne and blemishes.

LED face mask colours – what each wavelength does

Red light at around 630 nm is the most widely used wavelength for signs of ageing. It's absorbed in the upper layers of the skin, and that's where most studies on wrinkle depth and firmness have been carried out.

Near-infrared light at around 850 nm is invisible to the eye and reaches deeper. It's used for firmness and deeper treatment, and it's the wavelength that separates a serious anti-ageing mask from one that simply has lots of colours.

Blue light at around 470 nm works in a completely different way. It's antibacterial and targets acne and blemish-prone skin rather than signs of ageing.

The takeaway: the product name tells you nothing, the wavelengths tell you everything. A mask that doesn't state its wavelengths is a mask you know nothing about.

LED face mask benefits – and what to expect

Used consistently, an LED face mask can help with fine lines, firmness, uneven skin tone and blemishes. Results are gradual: texture and glow usually improve first, firmness and fine lines take longer. It won't erase deep wrinkles, and it isn't a substitute for medical treatment – but for regular at-home use, red and near-infrared light have a solid and growing body of research behind them.

Cheap or expensive – what are you really paying for?

Under about £100, corners are usually cut on one or more of these: too few LEDs to cover the face evenly, no stated light output, no CE marking, no money-back guarantee, or no one to contact when something goes wrong.

Over about £400, you're rarely paying for more light. You're paying for the brand name, US FDA clearance and the marketing budget. What actually determines your results sits in the middle: documented wavelengths, enough LEDs, a good fit, and using the mask consistently for weeks.

Our LED masks

SoftSkin InfraLight™ is our best-selling LED mask and the one our customers are happiest with. 240 LEDs across four wavelengths: red 630 nm, yellow 590 nm, blue 470 nm and near-infrared 850 nm. The last one is key – near-infrared reaches deepest and is the best-documented wavelength for firmness and collagen. It also states its light output, 63.2 mW/cm² in red + NIR mode, which few masks do. Soft medical-grade silicone; CE, ISO and RoHS certified, with a 3,000 mAh battery.

SoftSkin InfraLight™ Face, Neck & Chest uses the same technology but also treats the neck and décolletage, where signs of ageing often show first. Also available as Neck & Chest on its own.

All masks are used for 10 minutes, 3–5 times a week, are CE marked and come with a 90-day money-back guarantee.
